In its essence, leadership in an organizational role involves: Establishing a clear vision, Sharing (communicating) that vision with others so that they will follow willingly, Providing the information, knowledge, and methods to realize that vision, and Coordinating and balancing the conflicting interests of all members or stakeholders.

A leader comes to the forefront in case of crisis, and is able to think and act in creative ways in difficult situations. Unlike management, leadership flows from the core of a personality and cannot be taught, although it may be learnt and may be enhanced through coaching or mentoring.

Leaders at Silicon Genomics will seek input and involve key stakeholders in important decisions. In gathering input, leaders will welcome diverse opinions, conflicting views and open dialogue for serious consideration. They will clearly communicate decisions and rationale openly and in a timely manner. Once a decision is made, the leader and members of the team will all be accountable for the results and for implementing the decision rapidly.

The skills necessary at various stages of the company's development will necessarily evolve as the needs of company evolves. The Leadership Team may transition to different roles whether active in day-to-day activities or in an advisory capacity during the early stages of our development.
